Baby Boy Romper

Last week I blogged about a gift I had made for my friend who was awaiting the arrival of her first baby. I had to make the hat and little shoes in neutral colours because she did not know the sex of the baby. Since then, the gorgeous little Oliver has arrived and so I have been busy creating a few things that are all boy!

For a long while I have had my eye on a beautiful girl's romper pattern by Shauna at Shwin and Shwin. But ever since she offered this pattern and tutorial up for free, all the new babies in my life have been boys. As this pattern is so fab I decided to try and make it in a boyish blue checked seersucker and see how it turned out. And to my delight (minus the cuffs at the ankle) the romper has come out looking reasonably boyish and perfectly acceptable for a newborn boy to wear.

Since the weather out is crazily cold for this time of year (snow at the end of March!) I decided to use fleece for the front and back facings and for the backs of the shoulder straps. I used interfacing between the layers as I was using snaps and find that fleece needs a little stability with these fastenings.

I used the same seersuckers fabric for the facings along the inside legs (where the poppers fasten), with interfacing (the seersucker is quite a lightweight fabric so needs the stability). I used white KAM snaps at the inside leg seams and also for the shoulder fastenings. I added two snaps to each strap to allow for some growth.

  1. That turned out really cute. I have a grandson that I'll make one for. I'm going to cut off legs and insert elastic for a summer romper and will have to size up for 12 month old.
